Playworkers help at Sichuan Earthquake

Millions of people who survived the deadly Sichuan earthquake have been left homeless, orphaned and displaced. Playright Children's Play Association (Playright), a non-profit making organization based in Hong Kong, has been supporting children in coping with this traumatic event in their lives through the medium of play.

The Sichuan play project has involved three main areas of work; giving away play packs and materials to children; conducting play training for local volunteers and delivering direct work with children and families in therapeutic play activities.

Welsh project celebrates achievements by ‘busking’ it!

To mark the end of a successful project for people running after school clubs, participants in The Kids’ Clubs Project  have all just received two of the popular ‘Buskers Guides’ series of books – over 7,000 books in total across the whole of Wales!

Funded through the European Social Fund, the project began in 2005 and has delivered free playwork training to more than 4,000 playworkers. Many of the participants had attended training in their own time. Project organisers Clybiau Plant Cymru Kids’ Clubs wanted to congratulate participants and encourage further study past the end of the project by sending out books to reinforce some of the key training messages about good practice in playwork.

Jane Burdett, National Training Manager for Clybiau Plant Cymru Kids’ Clubs said, ‘We chose the ‘Buskers Guides’ because we wanted to extend the learning experiences of our playworkers and managers to reinforce the messages from our courses. These guides are ideal as they are so concise and easy to use. The staff at Common Threads have been so helpful and have handled this request very efficiently.’
